Landbased Farming

Samherji fiskeldi has been farming salmon and arctic char for over 20 years, and many of our team members possess even greater experience, expertise, and specialization. The advancement and management of land-based aquaculture in Iceland rank among the best globally, and the industry´s future looks promising.

We are committed to leveraging our unique knowledge to produce top-quality products under optimal conditions.

The Advantages of Land-Based Aquaculture

When aquaculture is conducted in tanks on land, it allows for precise control over various factors. Oxygen levels, salinity, density, acidity, and temperature are closely monitored, ensuring optimal conditions for the fish at all times. There is little to no risk of accidental releases, and issues like lice are not a concern in land-based aquaculture.

In harmony with the environment

All of Samherji fiskeldi's facilities utilize green energy, harnessing geothermal power and pristine borehole water to produce high-quality farmed fish. Freshwater is used for the juveniles, while saltwater is used in the on-growing. The company's commitment has always been to engage in sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture, reduce carbon footprints, and operate in harmony with the community. In November 2021, Samherji fiskeldi achieved ASC certification for its land-based charr production, which is recognized as one of the most rigorous environmental certifications in the aquaculture industry.

Salmon and arctic charr

Samherji fiskeldi operates six land-based farms for char and salmon at all stages throughout the country, from spawning to processing and packaging of the finished product. Samherji fiskeldi is also the largest producer of farmed arctic charr in the world.

Salmon Garden

An exciting circular economy project is currently underway in Reykjanes. Samherji fiskeldi plans to build a farm near Reykjanesvirkjun, close to the coast, utilizing ground sea water and warm runoff water from the power station, that would otherwise flow unused into the sea. This production will generate valuable by-products, such as fishmeal and organic waste, that can benefit other companies in their operations. Consequently, this farm is set to become one of the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable fish farms globally. The construction will occur in three phases, with expectations of achieving an annual production capacity of approximately 40,000 tons of fish once fully operational.
